About Yo

Yolanda Cookson is a first generation American. Although from different cities, both her parents moved to America from Poland in the early 1970′s in hopes of a better life. As fate would have it, her parents met in San Jose, California in 1974. Growing up, Polish was the first language spoken by Yolanda and her younger brother, and they eventually learned to speak English when they began school. Her family later moved from the Bay Area to Lodi where she attended and graduated from Lodi High School. After high school, Yolanda moved back to the Bay Area to live with family and work full-time to put herself through college.

After several years of living in San Jose, she moved to Grass Valley for a change of pace. She acquired a position with Placer Title as an escrow assistant and as of late has transitioned to assisting clients with their business development needs. In 2005, Yolanda married her long time best friend, Carl Cookson. The Cookson’s made their home in Grass Valley. Yolanda is currently working on her Bachelors of Science in Business/Communications. She enjoys running, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

At the age of 30, Yolanda Cookson was elected to the Grass Valley City Council, as the youngest female in Grass Valley’s history to do so in November of 2008. As a council member, Yolanda looks forward to bringing the community together through a transparent and fair process. Acting as a leader and liaison, she offers a common sense approach, developing public involvement and an open dialogue to work for the benefit of Grass Valley. Through outreach and an exchange of ideas, she passionately pursues areas of economic advancements, environmental awareness, and quality of life for all. Yolanda listens to all input on any issue before making a decision. She encourages participation. By actively and respectfully listening, she strives to be the voice for the silent majority. Cookson looks forward to offering Grass Valley energy and youth, she prides herself on being straightforward and open-minded. She is grateful for the opportunity to grow and thrive in a small community.
